This resort sits in a scenic but mostly positively reviewed location, known for its pool area and bakery. Guests note significant inconsistencies in maintenance, with some reporting a dated appearance, while others found the facilities to be lively and fun. There are notable concerns regarding aging infrastructure and the inconsistency of customer service.
Short summary: Zermatt would have been luxury about 35 years ago. Unfortunately its less than 20 years old. The location for Zermatt is fantastic. Midway and surrounding area is lovely. albeit starting to become too built up. The rooms themselves are comfortable and clean, although rather dated, and therein lies the big problem. The resort is "tired". Everything looks like it has had little to no maintenance so the whole place is not looking luxury any longer. Concrete is degrading in the walkways, the wood needs to be stained, and just everything is old. The pool area is not very nice at all, and pool water is very cloudy. The staff themselves are friendly and helpful, but there is nowhere near enough of them. The bar is, well, oddly designed and does not have a great selection of alcohol. Its a shame as the resort could be amazing. Instead, it screams that the owners are extracting the maximum amount of money they can, and are neglecting it.
Let me start off by saying I stayed here 12 years ago for my wedding and this review is of the state of the resort since. We stayed in a two bedroom villa and the room was ok. The room key card 'demagnetized' once when my wife put the key in her purse next to her phone. I haven't had that be a problem for years. Why the system isn't upgraded is beyond me. But it makes sense walking around the resort. The carpet in the hallways is fraying in many spots, the roof at the indoor pool entrance was literally falling down. I understand a pipe can burst, but to not get some sort of covering on it until repair is ridiculous. The damage didn't appear to be recent either. The pool itself was cloudy and the plaster under the water had sharp edges and chips. The indoor-outdoor pool concept is cool, but is badly in need of maintenance. The grounds no longer have Swiss alp themed music playing and completely kills the original ambiance when walking around the resort. The giant outdoor chess set is falling apart. The lounge near the front desk is now a bar and no kids allowed. The bar from years past is gone and there is an entire building next to the main lobby that is closed up and you can see through the windows. Walls gutted to the studs. Why not cover up the area? The landscaping is ok, but needs updating and generally just looks unkempt. The best parts were the bakery (still delicious and reasonably priced) and the free mini golf (how is this the most kept up part of the entire resort?). We will not stay here again unless we see major money poured in to fix what's already here. It breaks my heart to see this resort in this state after knowing what it used to be. We will go to the homestead (which is no longer a sister resort and is putting major work to update) or get a rental somewhere in Midway. We love Midway and will keep coming back, just not here.
My wife and 3 daughters stayed here for a weekend and we loved every minute of it. Wonderful location, great rooms, awesome pools and hot tubs, my daughters loved the carousel ride, and fantastic bakery and restaurant at the resort. Very easy to go into Midway for meals and activities as well. The staff were great and gave us excellent service. Cannot wait to go back and stay again soon!
Location is fantastic. Quiet area, near a lovely town hub with lots to eat and shop and explore. The wildlife in the area is lovely. The style of the resort is very picturesque and it was kept very clean, for the most part. I enjoyed the bakery that was on site. The room I stayed in was clean and comfortable. The TV remote didn't work but the TV did and I enjoyed the cable. The doors were very heavy and slammed easily so I was woken up late at night from nearby doors opening/closing. There was also a big gap under the front door so a ton of light got into the room, which was super annoying as someone who is light-sensitive at night. I came to the resort as part of a group of teachers attending a conference and we all checked in one at a time in our group. My colleague, who was the only non-white member of our group, was treated very differently than the rest of us during check-in. The staff member was dismissive and talked down to her. Out of all of us, she was the only one to receive a literal 5-minute lecture from the staff member about how smoking and drug use was not allowed. I guess since my colleague wasn't white that the staff member assumed she was a drug user since no other person in our convention group got a smoking/drug warning, not to mention a 5-minute lecture about it. My colleague was also the only one not asked if she had a vehicle that she needed to check in, so she had to go back in the evening since she didn't realize she had to check in her car. The rest of us were asked about checking in our cars. I was standing off to the side waiting for my colleague to finish checking in and she was talked to significantly longer than anyone else in line about the rules and clearly being treated differently. If that had not happened, I probably would have put this at a 4 star review instead, but that kind of treatment of customers is just not acceptable.
I love this place I took my wife and kids to Zermatt and they had a really fun time. It's tucked away from the rest of everything and it just feels like the perfect little get away. The pool is great, the mini golf was awesome. All the restaurants were really tasty. It was a great experience and we'll definitely be back!
